Before we begin our introduction, let us start with a simple question, are you familiar with the term “Environmental Biotechnology”? If you are not, it is completely normal & understandable, given the very little exposure and attention it has had so far, especially in Indonesia. So to put you back up to speed, Environmental Biotechnology, as its name suggests, is a branch in biotechnology that specifically addresses environmental problems, such as renewable/green energy, bioremediation, as well as pollution removal by exploiting biological processes. The International Society for Environmental Biotechnology defines the term as “the development, use, and regulation of biological systems for remediation of contaminated environments (land, air, water) and for environment-friendly processes for sustainable development”. From this, we can simply describe it as the optimal use of nature, including plants, animals, bacteria, as well as fungi and algae, to produce renewable sources of both food and energy in a cycle of profit-making processes where the waste of a process becomes the stock to another.
The aim of environmental biotechnology is to prevent, arrest, and reverse environmental degradation through the appropriate use of biotechnology, especially by putting nature to good use, while still supporting safety procedures as a primary reminder. That said, it is significant in a lot of fields including agriculture, food security, climate change mitigation, as well as adaptation and the realization of the MDG, or the Millennium Development Goals. The MDG were eight international developmental goals created by the UN, one of which is “to ensure environmental sustainability”, which is aimed to be achieved by correctly employing environmental biotechnology.
Other than the ones mentioned above, here are some more applications of Environmental Biotechnology that may be significantly helpful to be adopted in Indonesia. The first application is wastewater and industrial effluents management, considering the amount of water pollution because of the rapid industrialization and urbanization here. Another application is for soil and land treatment. As the human population grows here in Indonesia, its demand for food from crops also increases, which makes soil and land conservation crucial. Environmental Biotechnology helps find a way around deforestation, over-development, and pollution from man-made chemicals, which is usually done when overpopulation hits the country.
